Developing Hydrophobic Paper as a Packaging Material Using Epicuticular Wax: A Sustainable Approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
There is an urgent need for a biodegradable, hydrophobic material that can be used in developing packaging materials. In this preliminary study, epicuticular wax has been extracted from the leaves of Calotropis procera and Alstonia scholaris using various solvents (i.e., ethanol, methanol, benzene, and acetone). The highest wax amounts were found to be 0.54 μg/cm2 and 0.13 μg/cm2 from Alstonia scholaris and Calotropis procera, respectively. The highest hydrophobicity (29.57%) was found to be in paper discs coated with epicuticular wax extracted with benzene from the adaxial surface of Calotropis procera.

Epicuticular Wax Alkanes of Scutellaria Lateriflora L. Leaves
The dried aerial parts of scutellaria lateriflora L. (family Labiatae), have been used for many years as a domestic remedy for epilepsy, hysteria, and nervous tension states. Although several phytochemical investigations have been made regarding the constituents present in this species (i. e. flavonoids, iridoids), none has been recorded concerning the cuticular wax. Using thin-layer chroma...

Subsequent to phytochemical investigation on scutellaria lateriflora (Labiatae) from Mazandaran provincein Iran, the wax ester fraction of the leaves has been investigated. Using TLC, CC GLC and GLC-MS, the alkyl esters of the epicuticular wax was analysed. Total concentration of the esters was 35% and it was shown to be composed of a homologous series having various chain lengths in the ra...
متن کاملWIN1, a transcriptional activator of epidermal wax accumulation in Arabidopsis.
Epicuticular wax forms a layer of hydrophobic material on plant aerial organs, which constitutes a protective barrier between the plant and its environment. We report here the identification of WIN1, an Arabidopsis thaliana ethylene response factor-type transcription factor, which can activate wax deposition in overexpressing plants. We constitutively expressed WIN1 in transgenic Arabidopsis pl...
متن کاملChemical composition of the epicuticular and intracuticular wax layers on adaxial sides of Rosa canina leaves.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The waxy cuticle is the first point of contact for many herbivorous and pathogenic organisms on rose plants. Previous studies have reported the average composition of the combined wax extract from both sides of rose leaves. Recently, the compositions of the waxes on the adaxial and abaxial surfaces of Rosa canina leaves were determined separately. In this paper, a first repo...
متن کاملOil adsorption ability of three-dimensional epicuticular wax coverages in plants
Primary aerial surfaces of terrestrial plants are very often covered with three-dimensional epicuticular waxes. Such wax coverages play an important role in insect-plant interactions. Wax blooms have been experimentally shown in numerous previous studies to be impeding locomotion and reducing attachment of insects. Among the mechanisms responsible for these effects, a possible adsorption of ins...
